Background of the Study
The mental health of adolescents in secondary schools has increasingly become a focal point for educational reform and policy-making in many regions. In Dikwa LGA, Borno State, where socio-political challenges and cultural nuances influence daily life, guidance and counseling services are emerging as crucial support systems. Recent research underscores that mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and stress have a direct impact on academic performance and social development (Adeyemi, 2023). Schools are now recognized not only as centers of academic learning but also as pivotal environments where mental and emotional well-being are nurtured. Guidance and counseling services, when effectively implemented, offer tailored support that addresses the unique emotional needs of students. Studies have demonstrated that structured counseling programs help in reducing behavioral problems and enhancing students’ coping skills (Chukwu, 2024). Additionally, the integration of mental health programs into the school system is posited to create a more resilient and supportive community for learners (Ibrahim, 2025). Despite the evident benefits, challenges remain regarding the accessibility, quality, and cultural sensitivity of these services in regions like Dikwa. Factors such as limited resources, insufficiently trained personnel, and local stigmas regarding mental health often hinder the full realization of counseling benefits. Educational frameworks in similar conflict-affected zones have shown that community involvement and government support are vital to sustaining these services (Olawale, 2023). The interplay between societal expectations and individual mental health needs necessitates an in-depth evaluation of how guidance and counseling can be adapted to local contexts. Moreover, the rapid social changes and external stressors specific to Borno State call for an updated understanding of these services. This study seeks to analyze the current state of counseling services, identify gaps in their delivery, and propose improvements that align with contemporary psychological practices. With emerging evidence supporting the importance of holistic student support, there is a growing need to ensure that counseling services are not only available but are also effective in fostering mental health resilience among students (Eze, 2024). By considering the multifaceted challenges of the local environment, this study will contribute to developing strategies that enhance both the quality and reach of mental health services in secondary schools, ensuring that students can access necessary support in a culturally relevant manner (Uche, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of guidance and counseling services in secondary schools, there is a noticeable gap in understanding their true impact on students’ mental health in Dikwa LGA. Recent community reports and preliminary surveys suggest that mental health challenges persist among students, yet the availability and quality of counseling services remain inconsistent (Bello, 2023). Many schools in the region struggle with limited resources, and where services exist, they are often understaffed or inadequately trained to handle complex emotional issues. Furthermore, cultural stigmas surrounding mental health discourage students from fully engaging with the counseling process, which further diminishes the potential benefits of these programs (Okoro, 2024). This situation is exacerbated by the ongoing socio-political instability in the area, which introduces additional stressors into the school environment. The lack of a standardized framework for evaluating the effectiveness of existing counseling services makes it difficult to determine whether these interventions are achieving their intended outcomes (Adamu, 2025). Moreover, there is little empirical evidence to support how counseling services have adapted to meet the evolving needs of students facing modern-day challenges. Consequently, the current gap in research leaves educators and policymakers with an incomplete picture of how mental health issues are addressed within these schools. Without a clear understanding of the service delivery models and the barriers that impede effective counseling, it becomes challenging to implement improvements that could benefit student well-being. Thus, there is an urgent need to systematically investigate the role of guidance and counseling services, assess their effectiveness, and identify strategies for overcoming the inherent limitations posed by cultural and logistical factors in Dikwa LGA.

Research Hypotheses
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the effectiveness of guidance and counseling services in secondary schools within a challenging socio-political context. By identifying strengths and gaps, the research offers evidence-based recommendations that can influence policy-making and improve mental health support structures. Enhanced counseling services will not only contribute to better academic performance but also foster overall emotional resilience among students. Ultimately, the findings will be invaluable for educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals seeking to design culturally relevant and sustainable interventions in Dikwa LGA.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to exploring the impact of guidance and counseling services on the mental health of secondary school students in Dikwa LGA, Borno State. The investigation will focus exclusively on the services available within these schools and the contextual factors affecting them. Findings may not be generalizable to other regions or educational levels.
